The Role
We are looking for an experienced Perl software engineer with some Linux and/or FreeBSD server administration experience. As our Software & System Engineer at CentralNic, you will gain exposure working with a variety of internet and development tech, web services, distributed and high availability services, and a future career path in a growing tech company.

This role will be part of the team responsible for the iwantmyname retail DNS brand, part of CentralNic Group. The team works entirely remotely, for customers all over the world using Agile processes and modern development and engineering practice, including unit testing and code review.

This role will ideally be based in the UK or EU in a distributed and remote working team. You will be working within a multi-skilled team on troubleshooting software and system problems Developing new features and bug fixing Perl web applications and backend systems.

Key outcomes of the role

Work with the customer support team to respond to issues and questions raised by customers.
Implementing new microservices, migrating legacy systems to cloud and shared services working with other teams at CentralNic and external partners.
Provision of On-Call support for the brand software applications and services on a paid rota basis

The Process

Our process will consist of an initial phone screen conversation over video via Google Meet or by phone with a member of our People team to make sure your expectations of the role are aligned with the business needs. There will then be the first round which will be a competency-based interview with the Hiring Manager and a member of the team, followed by a task and a member of the team.

We aim to keep you informed throughout the process so we will be communicative and transparent throughout (which also happens to be one of our company values)! ☺

Desired skills: Experience and skills that will help you succeed

Have excellent knowledge and proven experience with Modern Object Oriented Perl, but also confident and experienced working with legacy Perl.
Be familiar with Object-Oriented Programming and MVC in Perl and frameworks such as Catalyst, Mojolicious, Moose and DBIx::Class
Bring basic knowledge in the administration of Linux/Unix standard services (Linux, Freebsd, haproxy, nginx, Postgres, Couchdb, firewalls, ssh keys)
Bring basic knowledge and some experience in scripting with Bash and similar shells Know how to debug internet-related issues that occur in a distributed application and related Internet services such as DNS, and email
Confident working with a high availability cluster of mixed Linux and Freebsd servers, and staging environment and development environments
Have strong experience in unit testing both new and legacy Perl code
Confident enough with a variety of technology to learn to use and replace legacy applications written in erlang Be curious, research, and ask questions
Be working with the rest of the team in collaboration, and make sure you track your activity in Jira to ensure visibility
Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both oral and in writing in English
Be a creative thinker, always thinking “how can we” Experience and skills that will help you succeed
Experience in the tech industry, particularly ISP or retail DNS sectors
Demonstrable knowledge/experience of both nosql and relational database administration
Familiarity with message and job queues, such as RabbitMQ
Experience with unit and integration testing with Perl Experience with unusual software stacks such as Erlang & Elixir or KyotoTycoon
