The primary responsibility of the senior software engineer will be to deliver web applications for the SFGate. He or she will work directly with the other engineers and the Director of Technical Development. He or she will also be responsible for being a backup for the other engineers by becoming familiar with their area of expertise and maintaining such knowldedge over time as appropriate. The successful candidate will also provide expertise in the selection of the web sites hardware architecture include load balancers, commodity web servers, database servers, network attached storage devices, and networking component. The engineer will also be able to develop sophisticated benchmarking to measure the web sites performance and help in the resource planning. SFGate routinely integrate third party software and services in its web site, and the candidate will ensure that this integration is promptly effected in a scalable and maintainable fashion. Specific duties include:
Essential Duties: o Deliver applications based on specifications and coded to the standards of the SFGate engineering team. o Learn specifics of the SFGate web site implementation. o Solve bugs and otherwise maintain existing applications. o Read and understand documentation from external partners to effectively integrate said partners features and services in SFGates web site. o Provide backup expertise for the system administrator role. o Provide expert advice to the Director on software and hardware used on the site. |

Knowledge/Experience Required:
Qualified candidates will have successfully implemented and deployed high-traffic applications for public web sites, as well as demonstrated an understanding of the complete life cycle of product development. In addition, qualified candidates should have a proven track record or working in close-knit engineering teams. An ability to communicate clearly and constructively discuss technical issues is also required. Credentials Required: BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent Licenses: N/A Essential Skills Required: o At least five years of software development experience in a Linux/Apache/MySQL/Perl (LAMP) environment. o Effective communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of clients and staff o Ability to work productively in teams o Excellent problem solving. o Experience in scalability design, networking and high availability/high throughput storage infrastructures. o Experience and understanding of all aspects of Apache configuration for a high throughput web site. |
